Other famous churches

SAINT GIOVENALE’S CHURCH
This church probably represented Orvieto’s ancient cathedral. Despite the fact that the exact date of its construction is unknown, by all rights Saint Giovenale is considered the oldest church in Orvieto. The facade of a single-spired hut shape is smooth and built in tuff, main material of construction in Orvieto.

SAINT ANDREA’S CHURCH
It is possible to see the remains of the original mosaic floor of the oldest Paleochristian basilica under the current church. After the transformations occurred in the XIII and XIV century and the reconstruction of the XVI century, in 1926 Gustavo Giovannoni carried out an integral restoration work and he also rebuilt the dodecagonal tower similar to that of the Saints’.Severo and Martirio Abbey outside of Orvieto.

SAINT GIOVANNI'S CHURCH
It was completely rebuilt at the end of the XVII century, after serious damages were cause by an earthquake. According to tradition the church was built in 916 at the request of Pope Giovanni X, this is confirmed by the marble fragments embedded into the internal wall of the facade and into the holy water font, the only remains of the Romanesque edifice.

SAINT FRANCESCO'S CHURCH
Built in 1240, in the Medieval period it has been the theatre of important events such as the funeral of Henry of England, celebrated by Gregorio X in 1273, and the canonization of Louis IX, king of France, by Bonifacio VIII, in 1297.

SAINT DOMENICO'S CHURCH
Built after 1260 and consecrated by Urbano II in 1264, is divided in three naves. In the course of the centuries it has been completely transformed. The Gothic portal was moved here from the church of the Saint Spirit of the Armenians’ hospital. The Renaissance Petrucci chapel, in its moved whole, anticipates manneristic values animated by the combination of different materials.

SAINT APOSTOLS'
The construction probably dates back to the XI century but its current appearance has been determined by the radical Baroque intervention, with which were added the transept and the dome that, being the only one, has an important role in the panorama of the city.

SAINT LORENZO D'ARARI’S CHURCH
Built around the middle of the XIII century, the building, of Romanesque style, has a simple facade of tuff, on which opens a XV century portal crowned by a lunette. Figures of saints are represented onto the columns. The high altar, the table of which is set on an Etruscan altar, has a ciborium from the XII century and a wooden crucifix above it.

JESUS' CHURCH
Constructed in the XV-XVI centuries next to the cloistered monastery, it concludes from an town planning point of view piazza Clementini on which it has a side. The internal space is of Baroque style. On the high altar is placed the Madonna known as "dead-alive", because she was invoked by Cardinal Simoncelli at death’s door and by whom he was healed.

SAINT LUDOVICO’S CHURCH
It was rebuilt at the end of the XVIII century with the new facade. Inside the church are preserved a canvas, interesting for the rarity of its subject "The innocents adoring the Child", executed in 1410 and also a wooden crucifix from the Maitani school.

SANIT AGOSTINO’S CHURCH
It was constructed in 1263 as the residence of the hermit friars of Saint Agostino behind the ancient church of Saint Lucia and incorporated in the XV century in a new church still named after Saint Agostino. Despite the renewed classicism of the most recent construction, the Gothic character of the church stands out in the its richly decorated portal from the XIV century.
